In class one day, in sealed envelopes with hand-written names in calligraphy, my thirty AP students recieved the letter shown here (click on it to view full letter). The students were invited (well required) to participate in a magic show that would be shown at our own high school and at a middle school down the road.

Magic Show
2014

Students took ownership of this project from the very beginning. They were excited about choosing a "trick" that was most interesting to them in any area of chemistry. Students were thoughful about the safety precations for their project and how they would implement these when giving a demonstration. The AP students were careful and creative in designing their experiment and developing a pamphlet to describe the science behind thier "magic trick", while keeping the perspective of the magician.

At the "magic show" you could see the students showing off what was exciting about their project and decide the best way to tell middle schoolers about the science. You could see the wonder and awe of the middle schoolers, especially the 5-6th graders, when any of the projects were presented to them.
